Munich Traffic July 2026: Luise Kiesselbach Tunnel Closure
The Luise Kiesselbach Tunnel will close northbound from July 1 to August 2, 2026. Drivers coming into Munich from the A95, A96, the Alps, or Starnberger See should allow more time.
From July 1 to August 2, 2026, the Luise Kiesselbach Tunnel in southwest Munich is scheduled to close completely in the northbound direction. The closure affects the tunnel section around the connection between the A95 and A96.
The repair work follows damage from a truck fire in April 2024. According to the city, the final repair includes tunnel ceiling work and technical systems such as ventilation, fire alarm, radio, lighting, and fire water infrastructure.
For visitors, the closure can affect airport timing, dinner plans, day trips, and weekend returns from the Alps or lakes. It also matters for anyone crossing southwest Munich by car, especially if you are renting a car in Munich.
Which direction is closed
The closed tube is the one heading north, into the city. This is the direction used when you come from the A95 near Garmisch or the A96 and drive toward central Munich. Farther north, the Donnersbergerbrücke also has roadworks into mid-July, so delays may build at more than one point.
The opposite direction stays open. Driving south from central Munich toward the A95 or A96 uses the tube that is not closed. Leaving Munich toward the mountains should therefore be less affected than returning to the city.
The closed direction is the drive into Munich from the A95 or A96. The tunnel remains open in the opposite direction. Follow the Garmischer Straße detour signs and check live traffic before driving. Use MVGO or MVV if public transport is easier.

The closure is one direction only. Driving out of the city from the center toward the A95 and A96 uses the open tube. The area may still be busy, but the main closure affects traffic coming into Munich.
Drivers can also consider larger detours, including the eastern side of the Mittlerer Ring or the A99 around the city. Public transport in Munich may be easier for some trips, especially when driving only saves a few minutes.
Other construction work is also planned in Munich during summer 2026, including U3 and U6 restrictions between Sendlinger Tor and Implerstraße. Check the actual route on the day you travel instead of planning around the tunnel closure alone.
Before you drive
For July 2026, allow more time than usual in southwest Munich. Add extra time for airport trips, dinner reservations, train connections, and day trips. Sunday returns from the lakes or Alps may be especially busy.
