Most shops and supermarkets in Munich are closed on Sundays, but restaurants, cafés, museums, parks, public transport, and a few station and airport shops remain available.

Start here
  • Most regular shops, supermarkets, and drugstores are closed on Sundays.
  • Restaurants and cafés can open, and public transport continues to run. Museums, parks, churches, and major sights are still realistic Sunday plans.
  • For groceries, there are useful exceptions at ZOB, Hauptbahnhof, Ostbahnhof, and Munich Airport.
  • If you need toiletries, sunscreen, or baby items, dm at Ostbahnhof is one of the most useful Sunday exceptions.

On Sundays in Munich, normal shopping mostly stops, but the rest of the city continues. Most supermarkets, drugstores, department stores, and ordinary retail shops are closed.

Restaurants and cafés often remain open, museums and attractions may operate normally, and trains, U-Bahn, trams, and buses continue to run.

If you need groceries or basic supplies, a few shops at major transport hubs and the airport stay open. They are useful backups, but buying normal travel essentials before Sunday is still easier.

Buy normal groceries and travel basics before Sunday if you can. Then Sunday can be used for the old town, a museum, a park, a meal, or simply a quieter day.

01What is open and what is closed on Sunday

Usually closed: regular supermarkets, dm and Rossmann branches, fashion shops, department stores, shopping centres, and most other retail stores.

Usually available: restaurants, cafés, beer halls, many museums and attractions, churches, parks, and public transport. Opening hours still vary by business, so check the exact place you plan to visit.

Marienplatz and the old town do not close on Sunday. You can walk the pedestrian streets, visit churches, eat, drink coffee, or continue toward the Englischer Garten. What changes is the shopping.

Viktualienmarkt on Sunday The market stalls are closed on Sundays and public holidays. The area remains accessible, and some surrounding restaurants, cafés, bakeries, or the beer garden may operate, but do not expect the normal Monday to Saturday market atmosphere.

02Where to buy groceries and essentials on Sunday

If you forgot to shop on Saturday, these are the Sunday options that matter most for visitors.

Quick choice
  • Groceries before 19:00: Lidl at ZOB beside Hackerbrücke.
  • Groceries until 23:00: Edeka Ernst at Hauptbahnhof or Ostbahnhof.
  • Toiletries and baby items until 23:00: dm at Ostbahnhof.
  • Sunday arrival at the airport: REWE at Munich Airport, open until 23:00.

Sunday and holiday hours can change. Check the exact branch again on the day if the timing is important.

Lidl at ZOB (Hackerbrücke)
  • Address: Hackerbrücke 4, 80335 München
  • Sunday and holidays: 09:00 to 19:00
  • Monday to Saturday: 07:00 to 21:00
  • Useful for: a normal grocery run without going through the main railway station

If you only need groceries, this is often the easiest Sunday option. It is directly beside Hackerbrücke S-Bahn station, one stop west of Hauptbahnhof.

Hauptbahnhof: Edeka Ernst

Edeka Ernst at Munich Central Station

Edeka Ernst at Munich Central Station. Useful for a full grocery run on Sunday, but often busy.

Edeka Ernst at Hauptbahnhof is open Sunday 08:00 to 23:00. It is a proper supermarket with water, bread, fruit, groceries, toiletries, nappies, and other basics.

How to find it: it is in the S-Bahn underground level on the Arnulfstraße side of the station. Hauptbahnhof is still a major construction area, so allow a little extra time if you have never used the station before.

Sunday checkout queues can be long. If you are rushing for a train, avoid doing a large grocery shop here.

Sunday luggage tip If you check out on Sunday and still want to move around Munich, solve luggage storage before you start. Hauptbahnhof has lockers, but availability is not guaranteed. For station lockers, apps, airport storage, and other options, see Luggage Storage in Munich.

Ostbahnhof: Edeka and dm in the same station

Ostbahnhof is useful when you need both groceries and drugstore items. Edeka Ernst at Ostbahnhof is open Sunday 08:00 to 23:00.

dm at Ostbahnhof in Munich open on Sunday

dm at Ostbahnhof. One of the useful Sunday exceptions for toiletries, sunscreen, baby items, and personal care basics.

dm at Ostbahnhof is open Sunday 06:30 to 23:00. It is useful for toiletries, cosmetics, sunscreen, baby items, nappies, vitamins, and other personal care products.

How to find dm: from the S-Bahn, follow signs toward U-Bahn. From the U5, follow signs toward S-Bahn. The shop is in the connecting passage.

If you need groceries plus toiletries or baby items, Ostbahnhof is the most useful single stop. If you only need groceries before 19:00, Lidl at ZOB is often simpler.

Munich Airport: REWE for Sunday arrivals

If Sunday is your arrival day, REWE at Munich Airport is open daily from 05:30 to 23:00. It is in the Munich Airport Center, Level 3.

Buy water, snacks, breakfast items, or other basics before heading into the city if you know you will need them. Use it if you are already at the airport. It is not worth a separate trip from central Munich.

03After 23:00: late night food and drink

After the station supermarkets and dm close, there are fewer options. Several REWE To Go at Aral petrol stations operate 24 hours and can cover a late night need for drinks, snacks, coffee, or a sandwich.

They are convenience shops, not full supermarkets. Do not expect a full grocery range, baby supplies, medication, or many toiletries.

REWE To Go is not always the same thing For late-night shopping, look for the REWE To Go at Aral petrol station format. A REWE To Go in another location may follow different opening rules. Check the exact branch before making a special trip.

04The 1 euro museum advantage

Sunday is a good museum day because several state museums in Munich charge 1 euro for admission to their permanent collections.

Useful choices include:

  • Alte Pinakothek for European old masters
  • Pinakothek der Moderne for modern art, design, and architecture
  • Museum Brandhorst for modern and contemporary art
  • Sammlung Schack for 19th century painting
  • Glyptothek and Staatliche Antikensammlungen at Königsplatz
  • Staatliches Museum Ägyptischer Kunst
  • Museum Fünf Kontinente
  • Bayerisches Nationalmuseum

Special exhibitions or additional services can have separate charges. Check the museum’s own visitor page before going.

Neue Pinakothek remains closed for renovation, with reopening planned for 2029. Selected 19th century works are shown elsewhere during the closure.

Museum Sunday warning The 1 euro price also makes Sunday popular. If you prefer a quieter visit, go near opening time and choose one museum rather than trying to collect several in one afternoon.
If you did not plan a museum visit, Sunday is a good day to add one. For most first-time visitors, one museum is enough.

05A simple Sunday plan for first time visitors

Morning: old town walk

Start around Karlsplatz/Stachus and walk through the pedestrian centre toward Frauenkirche, Marienplatz, and St. Peter. The streets are still active even when normal retail is closed.

Viktualienmarkt on Sunday. The public space remains accessible, but the normal market stalls are closed.

Lunch: choose a real meal stop

Restaurants, cafés, and beer halls still give you plenty of choices. If you want a Bavarian meal or are deciding where to spend the evening, see Munich Evenings.

If you are traveling with children, do not wait until everyone is already tired and hungry before choosing lunch.

Afternoon: choose one main activity

Pick one: a 1 euro museum, Englischer Garten, an Isar walk, Nymphenburg Park, Olympiapark, or simply a break at the hotel. One main afternoon activity is usually enough.

Evening: keep it simple

Have dinner near the old town or near your accommodation. If you arrive on Sunday, an early meal and a quiet evening may be better than another long trip across the city.

06Sunday with children

With children, Sunday is easier when basic supplies are already packed.

Prepare snacks and water, medication, sunscreen, wet wipes, an extra layer, and one meal backup before the day starts. If you need baby items or toiletries unexpectedly, remember the Ostbahnhof dm exception rather than searching from shop to shop.

With children, plan one or two good activities and keep the rest flexible. Having basic supplies ready saves time and stress.

07What not to leave until Sunday

  • Do not save normal grocery shopping for Sunday unless you know which exception you will use.
  • Do not leave souvenir shopping until Sunday.
  • Do not expect Viktualienmarkt to operate like a normal market day.
  • Do not plan a picnic without checking where you will buy food first.
  • Do not assume the nearest dm, Rossmann, Aldi, Lidl, REWE, or Edeka will be open.
  • Do not add too many fixed stops. Leave some free time in the schedule.

08Before Sunday in Munich

Quick checklist
  • Buy ordinary groceries, breakfast items, and drinks on Saturday if possible.
  • Prepare medication, sunscreen, baby items, toiletries, and other essentials.
  • Save one Sunday grocery option in your map if you may need it.
  • Check the opening hours of the restaurant or museum you actually plan to use.
  • Keep the day lighter if you are traveling with children, parents, or luggage.

A simple way to plan Sunday

Buy normal groceries and travel basics before Sunday if possible. Keep one Sunday shop in mind in case you need something later.

Then plan the day around the old town, one museum or park, and a good meal. Most regular shops are closed, but there is still plenty to do.

Shop hours, museum prices, Sunday exceptions, and restaurant opening times can change. Check the exact branch, museum, or restaurant before making a special trip.
