An Eclipse, Fireworks at 10, and a Bigger S-Bahn Disruption Ahead

Munich August 2026 has a busy Wednesday evening ahead. A partial solar eclipse peaks at 8:15 p.m., and the Sommerfestival fireworks start at 10. Gaming & Kids begins on Friday, while larger S-Bahn changes start next week.

Wednesday: eclipse first, fireworks later

The partial solar eclipse starts at 7:23 p.m., reaches its maximum at 8:15 p.m., and ends near sunset around 8:32 p.m. About 89 percent of the Sun will be obscured.

Olympiaberg is one of the city’s recommended viewing spots because of its open view to the west. Munich will not experience totality, so proper eclipse glasses are needed the whole time.

The Sommerfestival fireworks begin at 10:00 p.m. in Olympiapark. If the weather does not cooperate, the backup date is Thursday, August 13.

If you want to see both, staying in Olympiapark is the easiest plan. Watch the eclipse from Olympiaberg, spend the next couple of hours around the park, then stay for the fireworks.

Gaming & Kids starts Friday

From August 14 to 16, the Sommerfestival adds its Gaming & Kids weekend, with console stations, arcade machines, VR experiences, and traditional board and card games.

This weekend is most useful for families with children or teenagers. The Sommerfestival itself continues through August 23, and the free Theatron MusikSommer runs nearby through August 22.

S-Bahn next week: check your route in MVV

This week’s Westkreuz work is almost finished. S6 replacement buses between Pasing and Gauting continue until 4:00 a.m. Thursday, August 13. S8 is already back to normal, while S5 still has a smaller timetable change.

More extensive work follows from Monday night, August 17, through August 25. The changes affect the central S-Bahn corridor and Laim area, so some trains will run differently, end earlier, skip stops, or be replaced by buses.

If you are travelling during those dates, check your route in the official MVV app or journey planner shortly before you leave. Enter your actual starting point and destination. The app will show the available connection, including replacement buses and timetable changes. Check again before the return journey if you are coming back later.

Road update

Föhringer Ring reopened early on August 2. Giesinger Berg is currently closed to cars in both directions and is scheduled to remain closed through September 14. Pedestrians and cyclists can still pass through, while buses are rerouted.
