Munich’s Biggest Construction Site Opens Its Doors This Saturday
The Marienhof open day is a rare chance to look below one of Munich’s most visible construction sites.
Marienhof sits directly behind Munich’s New Town Hall, just north of Marienplatz. The square has looked like a construction site for years. What many visitors do not see is what is being built below it: the new Marienhof S-Bahn station for Munich’s second S-Bahn core route, the 2. Stammstrecke.
On Saturday, June 13, the project team is opening the Marienhof construction site to the public for one day. Visitors can go underground, see part of the construction site below the old town, and get a better sense of how a deep station is being built in one of Munich’s most sensitive locations.
What to know
- Where: MarienhofLandschaftstraße 5-7, 80331 Munich. Directly behind the New Town Hall, just off Marienplatz.
- When: Saturday, June 13, 10:00 to 18:00
- Last entry: 17:00
- Entry: Free, no registration required
- How to arrive: Use U-Bahn or S-Bahn to Marienplatz. There is no parking on site.
- Accessibility: The information center is accessible, but parts of the construction site itself are not.
At street level, project staff will be available for questions. The nearby information center explains the wider 2. Stammstrecke project with a multimedia exhibition. For families, the program also includes activities for children, including construction machinery.
Worth combining
This is also the weekend of Munich’s city birthday, the Stadtgeburtstag. Events around Marienplatz and the old town make the Marienhof visit easy to combine with a slow walk through the center.
If seeing the underground section matters to you, go earlier rather than later. This is a free one-day event in the old town, and midday can easily become the busiest part of the day.
